OUR MOTTO

“We play with friends but we don't play friendly game..”

Chronicle of KPMGA

by D. B Matzin

Started its inauguration early in 2006 under the unification of jovial golf nuts who labeled it then as FOM Club, bestowed in honour of senior founding fellow old men (FOM) who were often targets of provocative remarks by their fellow young men (FYM). Ridiculed by 'slanders and insults’ in a number of friendly grueling pastime undermining their capabilities, FOM took the juvenile fellow mates to punishing defeat. Concluded on par if not better hat-trick of victories proved that the old horse still yearns to run....... As more and more FYM joined the club that it began to change its identity. The nuts called it KPMGA to reflect the atmosphere and eccentricity of kampung way of sport. The 'association' grew from a tiny seed to a mighty nut.

If you think, you’re Golf Nut – this will be a venue for you to sprout!!!

******************************************************************************************************************

Dream of kampung boys....

You will laugh to see this page when one day a KPMGA nut appears on your TV screen in PGA championship tours....ha...ha...

What is your best ever score ?
87 in Saujana, KL and 39 at the Back Nine of KGM .
What is your most memorable golfing incident ?
My first golf game at the Universiti Putra Malaysia golf course. I did not take a lesson or went to the driving range prior to the game. I thought "I am a skillful hockey player where the ball is moving and others are chasing, and sometimes hacking, me. How difficult golf could be?". Well, we ended up playing 9-hole, instead of 18 - after I scored 72 and lost 16 balls! I was lucky that I was playing with really old friends who have gone through many ups and downs together - at least they still keen to play with me nowadays.

What is your best ever score ?
Best score at KGM 40/39.
What is your most memorable golfing incident ?
When I was hit by a golf ball while on 8th fairway from a golfer on 2nd fairway. I was playing with Kelana Ibrahim. We were very angry and waited to confront the golfer and his caddy. Turned out to be a Korean. When he apologised his voice was squeaky, no wonder he couldn't shout. When I saw the caddy both of us were laughing as it was Reduan - the dumb caddy who speaks with sign language. Both Kelana and I stopped being angry and started laughing.

Can share your most disappointing golfing incident ?
During a monthly golf competition, I realised that the three players playing with me are all cheaters!!! I think this is getting to be very common now!!!

The best course that you have played at and why ?
Borneo Golf Course at Bongawan. The Scenery and course condition is fantastic.
Your favourite hole in KGM and why ?
The new hole 12. More challenging and better looking with the boulder-lined banks.
Your least favourite hole in KGM and why ?
Hole two. Always wet and soft ground - even when the weather is dry. Poorly done by the club manager when he raised the middle of the fairway.
Your dream foursome ?
None - anybody will do except don't cheat!
Your golfing ambition, if any ?
None

Your dream golfing destination ?
Any course will do

Your favourite hole in KGM and why ?
No.6 – a real testing hole. 3-on is like winning (at Augusta) for me, never mind the putting. Missed an eagle by 18 inches once! I remember that very well but not the countless number of balls dunked in the stupid water.

Your least favourite hole in KGM and why ?
No.6 – a real love affair (see above)
Your dream foursome ?
With MW, PC, NG…(Webmaster - Not sure who these are ? Can anyone guess ?)

The best course that you have played at and why ?
Damai Golf Resort in Kuching when it first opened...backdrop to front 9 is the mountain and back nine is the sea. Sadly, the course is in a sorry state nowadays due to poor maintenance.

Also Hole No. 18, coz many of my tee-offs have either gone OB or hit the f$%*#>g trees. Kind of a love-hate relationship.

Al Jubail Trophy

Saturday 11th April 2009

The Al Jubail trophy was played with great gusto by the participants even though with black clouds gathering above. Nevertheless, the clouds were blown away leading to some hot spells. There were seven flights with equal number of participants of orange (Asians) and reds (Arabs) even though there were a few that turned up in other colours.....

As usual, the President "changed" the rules prior to tee off as there was no one that understood the rules that were laid down by Dom (Dom, you need to be around next time....;)

The new rules entailed that the match was between the two teams based on stroke play with handicaps confirmed by Tuan President himself that morning and the winning team based on net total score.

Below are the scores of the various flights.

Flight 1
Red - Ali Sajut + Hj Drahman : 172
Orange - Then + Bojeng : 156

Flight 2
Red -Surya + Tang : 155
Orang - Othman + Hj Wahap : 174

Flight 3
Red - Yusuf + Shaiful : 163
Orang - Chong + Wan Azilah : 151

Flight 4
Red - Azahari + Yatim : 157
Orange : Syed Zul + Julai : 169

Flight 5
Red - Feisol + Sha : 155
Orange - Benny + Kassim : 154

Flight 6
Red - Yusri + Amno : 152
Orange - Hj Ahmad + Syed Rosdy : 143

Flight 7
Red - Capt Siva + Hj Ibrahim : 166
Orange - James Lau + Roslan : 168

Total : Red : 1120
Orange : 1115

With the Orange team (Asians) winning by a margin of 5 strokes.

Ali Sajut who is a bit rusty unfortunately lost to all and had to give one Srixon ball to each of the other participants which he sportingly did. Good try Ali ! We will see you on your next trip.

The winning team also had share of the spoils after deduction expenses.

The 2008 Trophy was also given away to Hj Ibrahim who won the trophy donated by Dato Aziz outright. Members should note that no points were given for the Al Jubail trophy competition.

January 2009 Monthly Medal

The January Monthly Medal was held at KGM on the 17th January with 10 flights in competition. A major concern that the committee had was whether the weather would hold. It was very fortunate that the weather stayed dry from late morning Friday and enabled the water/soggy fairways to dissipate a bit. And the weather on Saturday 17th Jan was execellent but with strong wind which either helped or caused some wayward shots. The competition proceded on system 36 stableford, a decision that was made prior to tee off.

The monthly medal ended with an evening of dinner and song at the Broadway Lounge, Grand Palace hotel and the prize giving.
